MADE SAFE certified products by Alaffia are made without known carcinogens, endocrine disruptors, reproductive toxins and other chemicals found to harm human health
For years, Alaffia has led the way in ethically sourced and produced personal care products. Now the company is taking the next step in its commitment to sustainability by pioneering the revolutionary new MADE SAFE™ (Made with Safe Ingredients) seal for many of its products. As the first human health certification to apply to a wide variety of consumer products, the MADE SAFE seal empowers people to easily purchase items that that are safe to use with their families. The company has certified many of its shampoos, soaps, baby washes, and other personal care products. A list of certified items can be found here.
“Alaffia is proud to be part of pioneering the MADE SAFE seal, which will help consumers feel confident about their purchases. We believe in responsibly balancing traditional ingredients with science for the benefit of people and the environment and are excited to be able to better communicate this with our customers,” said Shane Hart, Director of Communications and Sales.
The MADE SAFE seal is an independent third-party verification that screens products for known toxic chemicals harmful to human health. Products carrying this seal have undergone rigorous ingredient screening to ensure they don’t contain known carcinogens, endocrine disruptors, reproductive toxins, neurotoxins, behavioral toxins, flame retardants, heavy metals, pesticides, insecticides, toxic solvents, VOCs, or GMOs, according to scientifically authoritative and expert lists from around the world. Ingredients have also been further examined by a chemist using available data and modeling software for bioaccumulation (builds up in the body), persistence (builds up in the environment), and general and aquatic toxicity.
Alaffia manufactures and distributes over 300 products, formulated with raw ingredients handcrafted using traditional methods in Togo, West Africa, including shea butter and coconut oil. Fair trade is the foundation of the organization, which is comprised of several cooperatives throughout Togo and a facility in Olympia, WA. All cooperative members are paid fair wages and proceeds from the sales of Alaffia products are returned to Togolese communities to fund empowerment and gender equality projects.
“We’re proud to work with Alaffia. We admire Alaffia’s empowerment mission and are honored to add a new facet to empower people to make healthy choices for their families,” said Amy Ziff, founder and executive director of MADE SAFE. “For the first time, we are giving people an easy way to find products that are safe to use.”
Studies show that common chemicals in conventional personal care products such as parabens, phthalates, and formaldehyde-releasing chemicals like Quaternium-15 have been linked to cancer, hormone disruption, reproductive harm, and other serious health impacts. Conversely, studies show that actively avoiding toxic chemicals actually lowers levels of them in the body.
The MADE SAFE seal aims to solve the chemical conundrum for people looking to protect themselves and their families from toxics in their everyday items. With scant legislation, little to no regulation around chemicals in commerce, and undisclosed ingredients, it’s nearly impossible for people to ascertain whether or not a product may cause harm. Until the MADE SAFE seal, no single trusted symbol has existed to signal parents that products aren’t made with chemicals that can harm their families’ health.
Alaffia, located in Olympia, Washington and Togo, West Africa, was founded in 2004 to alleviate poverty and empower communities in West Africa through the fair trade of indigenous resources. The raw ingredients used in their body care products are handcrafted using traditional techniques at cooperatives in Togo, which employ over 500 women. The finished products are produced in Olympia. Alaffia’s sales are reinvested into West African communities through Empowerment Projects, which aim to advance gender equality and eradicate poverty. Alaffia’s product lines include Alaffia, Authentic, Everyday Shea, Everyday Coconut, Beautiful Curls, and Queen Alaffia. Alaffia was named Whole Foods Market’s 2014 Supplier of the Year and Thurston County’s 2014 Employer of the Year. For more information, visit http://www.alaffia.com.
