*We will require full public disclosure of fragrance ingredients on labels and/or websites as part of MADE SAFE certification requirements by December 31, 2017. This deadline offers brands not currently practicing full disclosure the lead time to implement it, for both currently certified products and ongoing. Applicable product categories include but are not limited to: cleaners, air care, personal care. hair care, cosmetics, salon products, feminine care, baby care (i.e. wipes, diapers, body care, etc.), and other fragranced consumer products.

Of course, brands currently undergoing certification are under contract to fully disclose all ingredients to us as part of our screening process. However, our goal is to move brands toward 100% ingredient transparency on labels and websites so that everyone who uses certified products has access to ingredient information.

Certification Overview

We have pioneered the MADE SAFE® (Made With Safe Ingredients) Screening Process to determine that all raw ingredients used to make a given product are deemed safe and have been vetted by an independent third party to ensure that none of the stated ingredients are known to cause human health harm.

Our goal is to eliminate the use of harmful chemicals in products, to change the way products are made, and to solve the consumer conundrum over chemicals. Products carrying the MADE SAFE seal are the first step towards creating a healthy, sustainable product marketplace. With this seal, shoppers know at the point of purchase that products are acceptable for use on their babies, bodies, and in their homes.

We make it easy for companies to work with us. If you’re interested in utilizing our Toxicant Database and certifying your products, please contact us.

To work with us, we first conduct the MADE SAFE Screening Process where we utilize our Toxicant Database, a compilation of thousands of ingredients from authoritative “red lists” from around the world, to ensure that no ingredient is a known: behavioral toxin, carcinogen, developmental toxin, endocrine disruptor, flame retardant, GMO, heavy metal, neurotoxin, high risk pesticide, reproductive toxin, toxic solvent or harmful VOC. We also don’t permit the use of nanoparticles or synthetic biology.

With over 85,000 chemicals registered to the EPA that are potentially available for use today, and hundreds of new ones created annually, it’s not enough to prohibit chemicals on so-called “red lists.” That’s why in addition to the Toxicant Database, our chemist screens ingredients to determine if they bioaccumulate or persist in the environment as well as if they display general and/or aquatic toxicity, using predictive modeling software. If the safety of a given ingredient is unknown, we will defer to the Precautionary Principle and the ingredient will not be allowed. The current U.S. model for industrial chemicals allows them to be used until or unless they are proven harmful; we flip that model on its head and use available science for all of our determinations. We are investing in future generations by building a healthier future through MADE SAFE products and ingredients.

To work with Made Safe, brands must be prepared to take a journey to formulate even better products. It is rare for a brand to have all products meet the certification guidelines out of the gate and it may take a few years to get all products certified. We ask that brands commit to the goal of certifying 75% of products over time and we will recognize those efforts along the way. We want to help you craft MADE SAFE products. Our certification is rigorous and unique. Certified brands report that they learn from our process and are proud to bestow our seal on their products.
