Our nonprofit organization provides America’s first comprehensive human health-focused certification for nontoxic products across store aisles, from baby to personal care to household and beyond. Our goal is to change the way products are made in this country to ultimately eliminate the use of toxic chemicals altogether. We make it easy for people to find and buy products made without known toxic chemicals, give companies a road map for making safe products, and make it easy for retailers to select products that aren’t known to cause harm.

The Science Behind Our Seals

MADE SAFE® screens ingredients against our Ingredient Database of known harmful chemicals, which is made up of thousands of chemicals found on scientifically authoritative lists from organizations and agencies around the world.

We then go above and beyond to examine ingredients for bioaccumulation, persistence, and general and aquatic toxicity.

  • Behavioral toxins
  • Carcinogens
  • Developmental toxins
  • Endocrine disruptors
  • Fire retardants
  • Heavy metals
  • Neurotoxins
  • High-risk pesticides
  • Reproductive toxins
  • Toxic solvents
  • Harmful VOCs

MADE SAFE Nontoxic Certified™ products have passed MADE SAFE screening and gone on to be lab-tested as a whole.

You may see a slightly different version of our seal based on package size, but they all mean the same thing – that a product hasn’t been made with ingredients known to cause human health harm. Read below to learn more specifically about our seal and the process we use to vet ingredients.
What Made Safe seals mean image

MADE SAFE® | MADE SAFE Nontoxic Certified™

The MADE SAFE® (Made With Safe Ingredients) seal literally means that a product is made with safe ingredients.

We want to ensure that goods are made entirely from safe ingredients; that is, ingredients that are not known or suspected to cause human health harm as determined by scientifically recognized lists from around the world. In order to do this, our scientists and/or advisors analyze the materials, ingredients and chemical components of a product (as obtained through required paper screening) to ensure it does not contain known harmful ingredients or release vapors, gases, or by-products that could impact human health. (We are not, for example, determining whether or not the product is safe for a child to use unsupervised.) We scrutinize the molecular makeup of a product and our scientists determine whether or not those ingredients and elements are safe for the intended use of the product.

Once products are certified, it is still imperative that consumers follow the manufacturer guidelines for use.

MADE SAFE Nontoxic Certified™

The MADE SAFE Nontoxic Certified™ seal means that a product – in totality – is not toxic. It’s about starting with a base of safe ingredients, yet going over and above through actual lab testing to ensure that ingredient mixtures won’t cause harm. This is not the standard way of doing business today – however, it’s the best way to ensure that an item, in it’s totality, as it is sold, is nontoxic. We believe Nontoxic Certification is the Gold Standard of product testing and the future of product formulation.

MADE SAFE Nontoxic Certified lab-tests products in totality to ensure that no new toxins are formed in mixture, there’s no supply chain contamination, and to validate the screening in a lab environment. (NOTE: The type of product, ultimate use and manufacturing determine what lab tests need to be performed.)

We recognize that this approach is novel. Most products aren’t manufactured with human health implications in mind. We are pioneers in an emerging field, and there is still much to be learned. We won’t always be perfect. But we have built programs that allow products to be vetted against some of the best information available today. We update our processes annually. And the bottom line is that we prioritize people with every one of our decisions. We always come back to our core belief that the products we use on our bodies, for our children, in our homes and in our communities should be safe. Without external regulation of the thousands of chemicals in commerce today, the two-step Made Safe programs provide a logical path toward a healthy product marketplace.

We look forward to the day when our seals are no longer necessary; when all products are made from safe ingredients; when enough is known about how chemicals react in mixture that we may trust that products are being formulated safely. Until then, our seals are well defined in order to end the confusion over what you are buying and how it has been made and vetted.

Welcome to the world of MADE SAFE® and MADE SAFE Nontoxic Certified™.
