salt+blue was founded by Rachel Pachivas and Kevin Gianni, both of whom had concerns about conventional sunscreen. Rachel was deterred by synthetic scents and greasy residues, while Kevin, with his background in studying product ingredients, was skeptical of the formulations. The inspiration for their venture struck Rachel after she noticed a visible sheen from sunscreen on a river. This prompted them to stop waiting for someone else to create a cleaner alternative and to take matters into their own hands.

Both founders bring valuable experience to the table, having previously built Annmarie Skin Care. salt+blue specializes in mineral-based, reef-safe sunscreen made from organic and wildcrafted botanical ingredients, positioning itself against the harsh chemical filters often found in mainstream sun care products. Their mission revolves around what they call their "North Star": to live in harmony with the sun rather than avoiding it, protect oceans and marine life, care for skin naturally, source and package sustainably, and refrain from animal testing.
