MADE SAFE: Why are you proud of your MADE SAFE® certification?
Brentwood Home: Americans spend, on average, 90 percent of their days inside. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, indoor air can be five times more polluted than what’s outside. These toxins come from cleaning products, furniture, flooring, cabinets, paint, and other building materials. We have agencies to regulate outdoor air pollution. That’s not the case with indoor air. The best thing we can do to protect ourselves and our families is to reduce our exposure to harmful chemicals. That’s where MADE SAFE comes in.
We’re working to eliminate harmful chemicals in our household products. MADE SAFE gives us third-party validation that we’re doing just that. MADE SAFE has determined that the materials we use in our sheets are free from ingredients that could harm humans, animals, or ecosystems. And that’s good news for you, your family, and the planet.
MADE SAFE: Why did you start your company?
Brentwood Home: For over 30 years, we’ve been making mattresses and home essentials with a team of local artisans and fabricators in Los Angeles. From the beginning, we’ve obsessed over creating products using healthy and ethically-sourced materials, all inspired by our love for the natural world and our home in California. Before we started the Brentwood Home brand, most of our products were sold by retailers who added hefty markups, oftentimes more than doubling the cost of our products. In 2012, with much thanks to the digital age, we saw an opportunity to bring that California comfort and craftsmanship directly to you. That’s why we started Brentwood Home. No more overwhelming trips to the store or pushy salespeople. No middlemen. No deceptive retailer markups. This, combined with our handcrafting excellence, allows us to provide you with luxurious goods at affordable, honest prices.
MADE SAFE: What do you wish shoppers thought about more, and why?
Brentwood Home: The impact businesses have on our planet. Brentwood Home is reducing our carbon footprint through forward-thinking energy reductions and efficiencies, combined with cost-effective carbon offsets, to eliminate our overall carbon footprint. To achieve this goal, we’ve partnered with Carbonfund. We’ve offset our carbon footprint for our entire factory AND offset one full year of product shipments to support reforestation projects globally.
