Introducing MADE SAFE® Certified products from My Green Mattress, along with our Q&A with the company's Founder / Mattress Craftsman, Tim Masters.
My Green Mattress provides an alternative mattress choice to toxic conventional mattresses to make all families’ sleeping environments the healthiest possible.
Why did you start your company?
Our daughter Emily suffered from chemical sensitivities and allergies starting at a young age. My wife and I were on a mission to source healthier products for our home that would not expose her to unnecessary and harmful toxins and allergens. As a seasoned mattress maker, I was able to source the best organic cotton, wool, and latex for her crib, and create the Emily Organic Crib Mattress.
It didn’t take long to realize that there were many other families with similar needs, or who were seeking healthier mattresses made with organic and natural materials to complement their overall wellness and sleep health. We designed a complete line of organic mattresses, including the Kiwi Organic Mattress and the luxury Natural Escape Mattress, and soon thereafter launched My Green Mattress. We handcraft our organic mattresses in our family-owned GOTS & GOLS certified organic factory located in Illinois, and ship our mattresses to families across the country.
Why are you proud of your MADE SAFE Certification?
My Green Mattress is proud to have our organic mattresses MADE SAFE Certified, as it is our mission to handcraft affordable, nontoxic mattresses that provide healthy and safe sleep for families across the country. The MADE SAFE recognition is a nontoxic and chemical free verification that consumers value and trust.
What makes MADE SAFE the right certification for your products?
Consumers are inundated with over-the-top marketing and it can be confusing to understand what various product claims, messages, or even certifications mean. MADE SAFE is a leader in educating consumers on products that are dedicated to eliminating harmful chemicals and therefore it makes sense that the certified organic mattresses made by My Green Mattress would be among the products verified by MADE SAFE.
What do you wish shoppers understood about the kind of products you make?
There is a stigma that nontoxic and certified organic mattresses are too expensive or outside the budget for the average family, but that is simply not the case. My Green Mattress is committed to making nontoxic mattresses that are safe, healthy and affordable for the entire family. Everyone can benefit from reducing the burden on their bodies caused by environmental toxins.
A great place to start is with your mattress. It’s really a win-win: if you can sleep on a mattress for 8 hours each night, or more for kids and babies, and not have to worry about breathing in toxic chemicals, then you’ve made a big step towards a healthier home and lifestyle. My Green Mattress is committed to offering top quality mattresses from the nursery to the primary bedroom. Our quality and prices can’t be beat.
What’s the one product in your line you can’t live without, and why?
Our Kiwi mattress is so special! I just love this mattress as it truly suits every type of sleeper. It is safe, healthy, and affordable. I designed the Kiwi Organic Mattress to be a firm yet contouring hybrid mattress, which makes it the perfect choice for all types of sleepers; from children to teens to adults. We handcraft our Kiwi mattress with a pocketed coil innerspring and organic materials, including: GOTS Certified organic cotton, GOTS certified organic wool, and GOLS certified organic Dunlop latex.
Our mattresses are button-tufted to ensure long lasting comfort, without the use of adhesives, and are made without the use of chemical flame retardants or polyurethane foams so you can rest assured you are getting the healthy sleep you deserve. A button-tufted mattress, like the Kiwi, can last 1.5 times longer than a conventional mattress without buttons, which ensures that your mattress will last longer and be more sustainable for a healthier planet. Button tufting and an upgraded spring with lumbar and side supports in the Kiwi Mattress sets us apart from our competitors at this price point.
The Kiwi Organic Mattress is offered as either a one or two-sided mattress. A two-sided mattress is upholstered the same way on both sides, giving you the option to flip your mattress and extend its life. The Kiwi works well on any traditional foundation or adjustable bed. The Kiwi is also available in a special low-profile height to meet the safety requirements of bunk beds and trundle beds.
What have you done to make your own life healthier, and why?
Healthy, restorative sleep is the one gift we can truly give ourselves. I exercise regularly, eat a healthy diet that is low in sugar, and do my best to get a good night’s sleep by sticking to a regular nighttime schedule that includes avoiding caffeine and turning off electronics at least an hour before going to bed. My 12-year-old daughter is a dancer, and loves “trying” to teach me her stretching routines. Staying active and enjoying my family are top priorities for my physical and mental health and are easy to achieve in my everyday life.
Is there something we forgot to ask that you want to share with us?
We are truly a family owned and operated, Made in the USA company. Cindy and I are the owners and manage all aspects of the business with an amazing team on board to support us. We work together on product design and development, customer service management, marketing and manufacturing. I'm active at the mattress factory starting early each morning - sewing, ordering inventory and repairing machines. I then move to our local showroom to answer phones and help customers choose the mattress that is right for them. Each mattress is made to order. You can watch a video of our certified organic process on our website here.
